Networking a Win9.x PC to a Win2K PC Are you getting an IPC$ password prompt when networking to a Win2K computer? Solution #1 - Enable Guest Account on Win2K Computer The Guest account on your Win2K computer is disabled by default. This option is hidden inside the Computer Management console. Go to Start Menu | Settings | Control Panel | Admin Tools | Computer Management | System Tools | Local Users and Groups | Users. You will see the disabled Guest account on the right. Right-click on Guest, and select Properties. Remove the check mark from the "Account is disabled" option, and then click OK. NOTE: Enabling the Guest account is potentially insecure if you are using NetBIOS over TCP/IP and allowing connections from the Internet. If you are using NetBEUI behind a firewall or NAT, then the Guest account is safe from the Internet. Solution #2 - Create an Account on the Win2K Computer for the Win9.x Computer Create a user account on the Win2K computer and then log into the Win9.x computer with this username and password. (If you did a default install with Win98, it probably has your whole name as the username.) From the desktop of your Win2K computer, right-click on My Computer and choose Manage. Expand Local Users and Groups, and then click on Users. Right-click somewhere in the right window and choose New User. In username field, use the same username that you log into your Win9.x machine with. Enter the password used on the Win9.x computer (if any) here also. Remove the check from "User must change password at next logon". Select "Password never expires". Log into the Win9.x computer using the username/password that you've set up on the Win2K computer.
