Free Spyware Removal

NOTE: These tools are not perfect! The only cure for some spyware infections is either tedious manual removal or a clean installation of Windows. You should be warned that spyware (and viruses) can damage important system files and your Internet connectivity. This damage can become manifest after the spyware is removed. Always back up any sensitive data before using these tools.

Spybot - Spybot Search and Destroy remains one of the very best spyware removal tools currently available. It's a freeware application written and maintained by Patrick M. Kolla. Before scanning your PC with Spybot, update it via the built-in update feature. (Download).

Windows Defender - Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - AVG's free Anti-Virus (version 8) software now protects you against spyware, too.

Ad-Aware Free - Ad-Aware Free is a great spyware removal tool. It is free for personal use.

ToolbarCop - ToolbarCop is a browser extensions manager which can disable or eliminate unwanted Internet Explorer toolbars and system startup items. This is a powerful tool. Use it with caution! It is for advanced users only! (Download)

SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster is an immunization tool. It is not a removal tool. It will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers and dialers. It can also block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Additionally, it can restrict the actions of certain websites within Internet Explorer. It's free for personal and educational use. For maximum protection, update SpywareBlaster regularly via the built-in update feature. (Download).

TrendMicro HijackThis - Warning: This tool is for advanced users only! HijackThis is a free utility which quickly scans your Windows computer to find settings that may have been changed by spyware, malware or other unwanted programs. HijackThis creates a report, or log file, with the results of the scan. HijackThis does not determine what is good or bad. Do not make any changes to your computer settings unless you are an expert computer user.
