Update on the 'Bailout'
Both Ron Paul and Michael Moore are against the bailout. That makes me think it might be good idea, after all. :-)

Wall Street Bailout
I have no idea whether this 'Bailout' is a good thing or a bad thing. On the one hand, the people that were in power when the crap hit the fan are crafting the bailout plan. On the other hand, if these people are telling the truth when they warn us of the credit market 'seizing up' if no action is taken, there will indeed be economic consequences throughout the economy.
I need more data. At this point, to quote Obama, "this is above my paygrade".
In general, I'm very opposed to rewarding bad behavior. But, is this the government correcting their own mistake or this government helping out their rich buddies?

Paul Newman 1925-2008
Paul Newman has died at the age of 83. He will be greatly missed. He was one of my favorites. His performance in Cool Hand Luke is the stuff of legends. I particularly enjoyed him in Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, The Color of Money, The Verditct, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Nobody's Fool and The Long, Hot Summer. He gave millions of dollars to charity during his life, which is very commendable.

1st Presidential Debate
It was a tie. McCain was the agressor, but Obama held his own. They both live to see another poll, another debate and another day.

Offshore Drilling Ban to Expire
The Democrats have decided
not to pursue extending the ban on offshore drilling.
Jeff Goldstein's
take: "Bottom line: the Dems feared that the hold-up on drilling was a very potent weapon for McCain to use in his presidential run. So naturally they surrendered their "principles" in order to try to win the election."

State of the Presidential Election
My personal sampling of news
sites and
bloggers that support Senator Obama for President reveal this: they are getting nervous and they don't why Palin has millions of supporters. They have gone from thinking the election will be a "lock" and a "landslide" to wondering if Obama may lose in November.
I don't exactly know why, but it seems that more negative Palin reporting = more votes for the McCain/Palin ticket. The press has hammered Palin with both absurd and legitimate criticsms for almost two weeks and McCain is still ahead in the polls. The
swing states are even looking good for McCain.
My own guess is that Palin comes across as "likable". Self-described "regular folks" cannot understand why the majority of the press hates her. Bill Maher recently said that he wants his President to be "Elitist". I think Maher is in the minority, with that opinion. I think Americans want an
intelligent President, but I don't think the idea of an Elitist President sits well with most.
So how does Obama win? He proves to the folks that is he has a plan for the economy and he convinces voters in Ohio, Virginia and Michigan that he's not Elitist.

WSJ Takes on Palin's Bridge Talk
Wall Street Journal:
Record Contradicts Palin's 'Bridge' Claims
Good to know. Glenn Reynolds says, "Remember, you may like her, but like everybody else in this race
she's a politician."
Court Poll
Rasmussen: "While 82% of voters who support McCain believe the justices should rule on what is in the Constitution,
just 29% of Barack Obama's supporters agree."
I believe this statistic alone may reveal one of the reasons why there is such a disconnect between many of us, politically. It would seem that, in general, we are divided into two main groups: (1) a group that wants to play by the rules, and (2) a group with little or no regard for the rules.
Surely, it's not really that simple. The mindset of wanting to throw the Constitution out the door is hard for me to understand. Surely this poll is not accurate. I just can't believe that so many people think judges should make decisions, with no regard for the rule of law.

Dems Jump the Shark?
Have the Democrat pundits jumped the shark?
Arianna Huffington now says that Sarah Palin is a 'Trojan Moose'.
Plus, on the pop culture front,
Russell Brand publicly attacked Bush, Palin and McCain at the VMAs. I guess he doesn't realize that as a Brit, he's probably helping McCain by
doing something like this. (I'm not saying that Americans don't like Brits. I'm saying that a huge chunk of the electorate are not impressed when foreigners speak ill our President, a sitting Senator and a sitting Governor.)

'End of the World' Fascination
BBC: "There have been many groups that have predicted the end of the world, or Tribulation, or Rapture, dealt
with it not coming to pass and then issued new ones."
The Happening
The Happening - Dreadful. How M. Night got such big-name talent to sign on to such a piece of crap, I don't know. At the last minute, right before the film hit theaters, M. Night started saying in interviews that he had made a B-Movie. Well, he did make a B-movie. But, I don't think this is what he had planned, at all. It plays like a B-Movie that doesn't know it's a B-Movie.
This is the danger in personally Writing/Producing/Directing your own films. Nobody can intervene and tell you that you've lost your mind and you're making laughable movies.
I know the guy is talented and I want to see him get back on track.

Hurricane Ike
Say hello to Hurricane Ike. Here we go again.
Unity or Unanimity?
"Legalistic authoritarianism shows itself in the confusion of unity with a human insistence on unanimity. Unity is a profound, even mystical quality. It takes great effort to achieve, yet more effort will never produce it; it is a source of great security, yet demands great risk."
"Unanimity, on the other hand, is very tidy. It can be measured, monitored, and enforced. It is largely external, whereas unity is essentially internal. Its primary goal is correct behavior, while unity's is a right spirit."
"Unanimity insists on many orthodoxies in addition to those of belief and behavior, including orthodoxy of experience and vocabulary."

It looks as if Gustav is definitely not in the same league as Katrina, which is good news. Will the levees hold in New Orleans? Too early to tell.
