Expectant Victim ABCNews: Pregnancy Doesn't Protect Women from Abuse or Murder - "These cases seem to support studies from recent years that have found that homicide is the leading cause of death among pregnant women outside of medical complications."
Firms Held Blameless For Copyright Violations "A federal judge in California ruled yesterday that the Internet's most popular music-swapping services are not responsible for copyright infringements by users. It is a potential victory for the millions of people who share songs over the Internet, and a blow to record companies trying to shut down systems that enable what they consider to be theft."

Privacy Ruling Goes Against Verizon "Verizon must reveal the identities of two high-speed Internet subscribers accused of illegally trading music online, a federal judge ruled today. U.S. District Court Judge John Bates denied Verizon's request for a stay of his January ruling ordering the company to turn over the name of one of the subscribers to the RIAA. Bates said that Verizon has 14 days to convince a federal appeals court to grant a stay of his ruling. If Bates's ruling ultimately stands, it would give the recording industry and copyright owners a powerful weapon to stop the illegal trading of copyrighted files that they say eats away at their revenues."

Al Qaeda Fractured "The al Qaeda terrorist network is becoming increasingly ineffective, according to a written assessment produced by the U.S. intelligence community, sources told ABCNEWS. Analysts who track al Qaeda for the intelligence community believe that evidence is mounting that the terrorist organization may lack the command and control, the resources and coordination to conduct an operation of the same magnitude as 9/11. According to analysts, the terror network has split into two leadership committees. One is said to be operating in Iran and remains in contact with Osama bin Laden, who is believed to be hiding along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan's lawless frontier region."

Marines Discover Terror Training Camp Near Baghdad "U.S. forces came upon a recently abandoned terrorist training camp on the outskirts of Baghdad where recruits were apparently taught how to make bombs and what to do if they got captured, the Marines said Wednesday. The extensive camp consisted of about 20 permanent buildings on 25 acres south of the city and was operated by the Iraqi government and the Palestine Liberation Front, said Marine spokesman Cpl. John Hoellwarth. Among the documents found were filled-out questionnaires that included such questions as "What type of missions would you like to carry out?" according to Hoellwarth. He said many recruits wanted to carry out suicide missions."

Some Nations Note Saddam's Quick Fall "The rapid collapse of Saddam Hussein's government may have served as a reality check for the remaining states in President Bush's "axis of evil," Iran and North Korea. North Korea now says multilateral talks about its nuclear program -- which the United States wants -- are not a bad idea after all. Iran's former president, long allied with Islamic hardliners against the "Great Satan" America, is advocating a referendum on renewing ties with the United States."
U.S. Threatens Sanctions Against Syria "The Bush administration is demanding that Syria stop sponsoring terrorism and harboring remnants of Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime or face diplomatic or economic sanctions. "It is time to sign on to a different kind of Middle East," national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said Monday as Syria took another public pasting from the administration. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Iraqis who have knowledge of weapons of mass destruction and Iraqi political leaders "are the kinds of individuals who should not be allowed to find safe haven in Syria."

WorldCom to Adopt MCI Name "WorldCom will rebrand itself as MCI possibly as early as next week in an attempt to move away from its tainted past. The carrier will announce the name change as part of reorganization plan that WorldCom will submit to a bankruptcy court. 1,000 Sites to be Inspected for WMD "U.S. military specialists in Iraq have inspected about 12 possible chemical, biological and nuclear weapons sites in Iraq and have a list of 1,000 sites to be checked in the coming days now that organized Iraqi military resistance has collapsed. Defense officials said members of a 200-soldier team, the Army's 75th Intelligence Exploitation Unit, are working on finding Iraq's banned weapons. General Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said yesterday a special "sensitive site exploitation" team recently checked a facility at Al Qaim and is waiting for test results."

Microsoft Ports Windows Media to Linux "The day has finally come. Microsoft has acknowledged the existence of Linux by allowing one of its own applications to be ported over to the rival operating system. U.S. Urgently Searching for POWs in Iraq "The collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime is complicating one of the U.S. military's top priorities in Iraq: rescuing American soldiers captured during the war. With so many Iraqi troops killed and communications cut off, it's more difficult to find Iraqis who know where the POWs are. The search of a Baghdad military prison where Americans were held prisoner during the 1991 Persian Gulf War found bloody American uniforms, but not the soldiers who had worn them. American forces are listening in on the remaining Iraqi communications, questioning Iraqi POWs and seeking help from civilians in trying to find and free the Americans, Pentagon officials say."

Celebrations in Baghdad
Saddam's Head

"In central Baghdad's Firdos Square, cheering and chanting Iraqis danced atop a toppled statue of Saddam, dragged off its massive stone base by U.S. Marines in a tank recovery vehicle. The Iraqis broke the statue into pieces and dragged its head through the streets, while others -- including children -- pounded it with shoes, an act considered a supreme insult in the Arab world."

Shock & Awe: It Never Happened "When U.S. bombs first pounded Baghdad, Fox News and other TV media breathlessly declared that the Pentagon's promised "shock and awe" campaign was "under way." In fact, it never took place, nor will it, U.S. officials say. The Pentagon at the last minute pulled its telegraphed super-punch, which was intended to quickly knock out Saddam Hussein's regime, officials say. And it still doesn't plan on delivering it as "Operation Iraqi Freedom" moves forward."

U.S. Troops Advance Toward Baghdad "Coalition forces have destroyed a key Republican Guard unit protecting Baghdad, U.S. Central Command said Wednesday, as American ground forces advanced toward the Iraqi capital on multiple fronts. Elements of the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry -- the lead force of the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division -- had moved to within 25 miles of Baghdad, said CNN's Walter Rodgers, who is embedded with the unit. That report was cleared by 7th Cavalry officials."
