Who are your 'movie buddies'? You know what I'm talking about. Those people that like the same films that you do. There are certain people that I wouldn't even think of watching movies with. There are certain people that I hate going to the theater with. Theatrically speaking, we're all on different levels. Here's an example. The other day a guy tells me that he doesn't like "Forrest Gump". What? I'm thinking to myself that this is one of the greatest movies of all time. I love watching "Forrest Gump". How could anyone not like Forrest Gump? Be warned. These people are out there. Immediately, I placed this individual outside of my "movie buddy" circle. No big deal. We all prefer different categories of movies. Admittedly, I'm a fan of dramas. I like true stories. I like war movies. I like movies about real people with real problems. I tend to prefer movies featuring strong male characters. I also enjoy movies that are complex. Now don't go thinking that I'm a movie snob. I'm not. On Friday night, I like explosions, bikinis, and fast cars just as much as the next fellow. However, I don't consider many action movies to be "great films". After seeing a few cheesy (yet entertaining) movies, I long for a real "film", where active thought processes are necessary. I like movies that contain symbolism. I like movies that feature characters that aren't necessarily good or bad. I like movies that provoke thought for days, weeks, or months afterward, but are also entertaining. Perhaps a list of some of my favorite films would best explain my tastes. Here goes...

Some of My Favorite Films:
The Godfather
L.A. Confidential
Unforgiven
The Sting
North by Northwest
Vertigo
Forrest Gump
Mississippi Burning
A Few Good Men
Star Wars
It's a Wonderful Life
His Girl Friday
Pulp Fiction
Casablanca
Singin' in the Rain
When Harry Met Sally
Jaws

As you can see, there are only a few newer films on this list. I can perhaps add "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" to this list, and it would be the first film of the new millenium that I consider a favorite. From the 90's you'll note five films, and the rest are pre-1980. Gene Hackman is my favorite actor. Coppola is my favorite director. There you have it. What do you think? Would you enjoy going to the movies with me?

I just love how there seems to be no end to the Microsoft conspiracies. Check out "Making Lemonade" by Robert Cringely.

If you thought some of my statements about Linux were outrageous last week, take a look at the following article. Looks like other people have noticed how Linux has the potential to become an "industry standard".

I'm undecided when it comes to Michael Jordan's comeback "attempt". On one hand, he's one of the greatest basketball players ever, so it would be great to see him back in action. On the other hand, is he going to be able to lead a team to the championship like he did with the Bulls? Will he be able to play at the skill level that no one has come close to since he retired? He's definitely got my interest peaked and he could very well make this an extremely exciting NBA season.

Have a great weekend!
